Peter Gabriel & Kate Bush – Don’t Give Up (1986)
Shannon Noll & Natalie Bassingthwaighte – Don’t Give Up (2006)

This is one of the best songs ever written & recorded. Its inspiring, lifting and gives you strength when you are lost in the wilderness of life. In Mr Gabriel & Ms Bush, we have two great talents intertwined. The simplicity of the production belies the fact that this song is just so fantastic on so many levels. It has one of the most honest music video ever. It consisted of a single take of both the singers in an embrace, as the sun enters total eclipse and re-emerges. II’s simple, beautiful and timeless . . . Take a listen.

This song describes the despair of a man (Peter Gabriel) who feels isolated & defeated by the economic system & the support given and wise counsel sung in the refrain, in this case, is a woman (Kate Bush) – “Behind every successful man, there is a woman”

Well this song played that famous qoute to perfection. How the man wanted to give up but the strength, wisdom and support of his woman prevented him so. This is a song applicable to many people in many situations. Never has this song been so fitting in recent times. In truth, this is a song of love and faith. Btw, it has been widely reported that this song has prevented many suicides. Amazing huh? Well, this song never failed to lift me up. I come back to this song when things are hard and seemingly hopeless. It helped me alot. At the end of a stressful day be it at work or personal problems, I close my eyes, listen to this and I go away to a different world a beautiful and peaceful place that only the mind and the heart knows.

I totally love it when I hear songs like this. This is music, real music. Btw two decades later, as part of the song’s 20-year anniversary, there is a remake done on it that’s worth a special mention as well. Its by Australian Idol runner up Shannol Noll and Natalie Bassing-whatever. Take a listen.

As they always say & what I’ve believed, nothing beats the original, but Shannon’s voice sounds damn good on this. He’s the reason why I liked this version as well. That dude can really sing. But the music vid is a routine, and for Miss Natalie, she’s just there as a pretty face and there is no real emotion and sincerity in her singing. They should use either Natalie Imbruglia or Missy Higgins. I believe both these two Aussie female singers can pretty much do the job better.

Nevertheless, I still think that it’s the best cover of this song ever. And that’s why I include both the original and cover versions here. Sometimes we stand in the places where no love or light is felt cuz we have stood in the dark places where there was no hope yet with faith and love we shall overcome & with them, make it better.

So, don’t give up aitez.
